As his seven children grew up, they took turns cooking the family
dinner, with Mel taking over on Sundays. Iris (Mom) had seven kids and
a husband who loved to cook, so she stuck to knitting. Trust us this was
a good thing!
Son Doug established the Knead and Feed in 1974 as a local bakery
serving the best breads, pies and cinnamon rolls on the island. Oh, and
they happened to make sandwiches to go on the bread - and what is a
sandwich without a bowl of soup? Soon, the Knead and Feed was a full
restaurant serving honest to goodness food made from scratch.
After thirty-five years, it seemed time for a facelift. In 2009, the
Knead and Feed will be undergoing renovations to the shop as we
re-imagine Mel's hangout. The third generation has taken over baking,
but the old favorites will always remain on the menu.

Next time you are in Coupeville, stop in for a piece of pie and a hot
cup of coffee. The grandkids will be happy to show you to Mel's
favorite table.
